A tourist died in Bukit Lawang this February 2012 after consuming local 'Mansion House' brand whisky.
The man, 47-year-old Endre Balatoni from Kazar, Hungary, died around 29th February 2012.
The cause of death is not known for certain, but counterfeiting of spirits is common throughout the world and Indonesia in particular.
Alcohol is either improperly produced, or adulterated with methanol. Methanol, a sweet smelling alcohol, destroys the optic nerve causing blindness and death in relatively low quantities. Numerous deaths occur all over Indonesia as a result of bootleg alcohol.
Avoid Indonesian-purchased spirits such as whisky, vodka, arak, etc., and stick to beer, which is safe.
