I was in Bukit Lawang last August and did the overnight jungle trek with Jungle Edie. Edie has grown up in Bukit Lawang and knows everything about the jungle's plants and animals and terrain. We saw lots of orangutans, monkeys and gibbons and even had an encounter with the infamous Minah. But we were never put in danger and knew that we were safe in the hands of Edie and his colleagues. The trek wasn't all hard work and we had lots of fun too. We set up camp for the night by the river where we swam and freshened up again. That night we all ate together, tourists along with the guides and porters, and they told us entertaining stories and we played cards. The next day we did a bit more walking and travelled back to Bukit Lawang by raft. Overall the experience was extremely rewarding and fun. I would highly recommend Jungle Edie as a guide if you want someone who is knowledgable and trustworthy but also full of life and fun, and you are keen to avoid the trappings of commercial holidays. Edie also organises trips to nearby Tangkahan where you can bathe with elephants. You can book your accommodation in Bukit Lawang through him (Jungle Inn, Sams Bungalow, Jungle Tribe) and arrange for an airport or Medan hotel pickup.
